Why Supporting Independent Film Matters
Independent film matters because it is human. By Melissa Kaye Bontempt, Founder/CEO
Every independent film begins in the mind of a person — a real person — carrying memories, questions, pain, hope, and truth. Whether the story is fiction or non-fiction, it is born from lived experience, observation, or deep imagination. It is then laid out carefully, frame by frame, scene by scene, as an act of courage and expression.
For me, independent film has been healing.
Telling my story through film allowed me to process experiences I didn’t yet have the words for. It gave shape to emotions that lived quietly inside me for years. Through storytelling, I found understanding, release, and ultimately, connection. Indie film didn’t just help me tell my story — it helped me survive it.
Independent film also gives space for voices that are too often unheard. It allows stories that may never be told in mainstream spaces to exist with honesty and dignity. These films don’t aim to impress; they aim to connect. They reflect real lives, real struggles, and real growth — and in doing so, they remind us that none of us are alone.
Being part of telling other people’s stories has been just as powerful. Every time I help bring someone else’s truth to the screen, healing happens — for the storyteller, for the audience, and for the community watching. Independent film invites empathy. It asks us to listen. It opens conversations that matter.
When you support independent film, you are supporting more than a project.
You are supporting:
-
Healing through storytelling
-
Creative freedom
-
Truth over polish
-
Humanity over profit
You are supporting artists who dare to be vulnerable and audiences who are ready to feel.
Independent film is important because stories save lives — sometimes quietly, sometimes loudly — but always meaningfully.
Thank you for supporting independent film and the healing power of storytelling.
